Genesis 36:22
And the children of Lotan were Hori and Hemam; and Lotan’s sister was Timna.
Genesis 36:22 (KJV)
Context
Genesis 36 records the family line of Esau, who is also called Edom. This chapter lists the chiefs and clans that came from his descendants. The verse focuses on Lotan, a son of Seir the Horite, whose family lived in the land of Edom. The Horites were the earlier inhabitants of that region, and their lineage became joined with Esau’s family.
Meaning
Lotan had two sons, Hori and Hemam. Their names are preserved to trace the Horite line. The verse also names Lotan’s sister, Timna. This detail is significant because Timna appears again in Genesis 36:12 as a concubine of Eliphaz, Esau’s son, and the mother of Amalek. The Amalekites later became a people often in conflict with Israel.
Biblical connections
The parallel record in 1 Chronicles 1:39 confirms the same names, showing the care Scripture takes to preserve accurate family records. The mention of Timna shows that women were included in genealogies, highlighting their place in the family line. This verse also connects to God’s promise to Abraham that he would become the father of many nations, as the Edomites and Horites were part of that wider fulfillment.
Application
This verse may seem like a simple list of names, but it reminds us that God is sovereign over all history, even the details we might overlook. Every person recorded in Scripture has a place in God’s plan. The inclusion of Timna encourages us to value the roles of women in the biblical narrative. It also teaches us to trust that every part of the Bible, including genealogies, has purpose in revealing God’s work.
Reflection
God’s care extends to families and nations, and He weaves their histories together for His purposes. As we read these names, we can be assured that our own lives are known and ordered by Him. This verse invites us to see the Bible as a historically rooted book and to appreciate the detailed way God preserves His story. Even the brief record of Lotan’s household shows that God notices every family and every person, and He works through ordinary lives to accomplish His will.
