Genesis 36:38

And Saul died, and Baal-hanan the sonne of Achbor reigned in his stead. Genesis 36:38 (KJV)

Genesis 36:20 is a verse from the genealogy of Esau, the brother of Jacob. In this chapter the descendants of Esau are listed, including the sons of Seir, who was a Horite. The verse specifically mentions the names of the sons of Seir: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. This genealogy provides historical and genealogical context to the narrative of the Hebrew Bible and highlights the development and expansion of the Edomite people, who were the descendants of Esau. The mention of Seir and his sons is significant because the Horites were a people who dwelt in the region of Mount Seir, which later became the territory of the Edomites. Throughout the Old Testament the Edomites and their descendants play a significant role in relation to the Israelites, who were the descendants of Esau’s twin brother, Jacob. The interactions between the Israelites and the Edomites are often marked by both conflict and kinship ties, reflecting the complex relationship between these two nations. It is important to note that the genealogies in the Bible serve various purposes, including establishing historical connections and tracing lineages. They provide a framework for understanding the ancestry and origins of different peoples and groups. While such lists may not appear directly relevant to the main narrative or theological themes of the Bible, they contribute to the overall historical context. By preserving the names and relationships of individuals and families, the genealogical records help readers appreciate the lineage and heritage of various individuals and nations mentioned throughout Scripture. In this way the seemingly simple enumeration of Seir’s sons enriches our comprehension of the broader biblical story and the interconnectedness of the peoples involved.
