Genesis 37:16

And he said, I seek my brethren: tell me, I pray thee, where they feed their flocks.

Genesis 37:16 (KJV)

Joseph, one of the twelve sons of Jacob, also called Israel, had been sent by his father from the Valley of Hebron to check on his brothers who were tending the flocks near Shechem (Genesis 37:12-14). When Joseph arrived, he could not find them and began wandering in a field. A man noticed him and asked what he was seeking (Genesis 37:15). Joseph’s reply in this verse is simple and direct: he is looking for his brothers and asks for help in locating them. His journey was not easy, for the distance was great and the danger real, yet he pressed on.

Joseph’s words reveal his obedience and diligence. He does not give up or return home when he cannot find his brothers. Instead, he asks a stranger for direction. His respectful phrase “I pray thee” shows courtesy even in a moment of uncertainty. This verse also highlights Joseph’s commitment to the task his father gave him, despite knowing that his brothers resented him because he was Jacob’s favourite son and had brought a bad report about them (Genesis 37:2). His polite manner of speaking reflects a humble heart, and his persistence shows that he took his responsibility seriously.

Joseph’s persistent seeking mirrors the faithful obedience of other servants in Scripture who followed God’s guidance even when the path was unclear. His journey to find his brothers leads directly to his betrayal and sale into slavery, yet God uses this painful event to preserve many lives (Genesis 50:20). This verse is a small step in the larger story of God’s providence, where human actions, even harmful ones, are woven into His redemptive plan. The man’s answer points Joseph to Dothan, setting the stage for the events that would eventually bring him to Egypt, fulfilling God’s purposes.

Joseph models faithful obedience in ordinary tasks. He did not choose his mission, but he carried it out with care and persistence. Believers today can learn to serve God faithfully in the responsibilities they are given, even when those tasks are difficult or seem small. When we become lost or confused, we can follow Joseph’s example by asking for help and continuing to seek what God has called us to do. His example encourages us to be both courteous and determined, trusting that God sees our efforts.

This verse invites us to consider our own willingness to obey God’s commands, especially when the outcome is uncertain. Joseph’s simple question shows trust in his father’s instructions and a humble spirit. As we read his story, we are reminded that God sees our faithful steps, even when we do not yet understand His purposes. We can trust that He guides those who seek to do His will, and that our small acts of obedience are part of a larger plan we may not yet see.
