Genesis 37:21

And Reuben heard it, and he delivered him out of their hands; and said, Let us not kill him.

Genesis 37:21 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the story of Joseph, the son of Jacob, who is also called Israel. Joseph’s brothers are filled with jealousy and resentment because their father shows favouritism toward him, symbolised by the coat of many colours. In this moment, the brothers are plotting to kill Joseph, but Reuben, the eldest brother, hears their plan and steps in to protect him.

Reuben’s words, “Let us not kill him”, are a direct plea to spare Joseph’s life. His intervention shows compassion and a sense of responsibility as the firstborn. Reuben intends to rescue Joseph and return him safely to their father, as the next verse reveals. His action reflects the sanctity of life and a moral check against murder. Reuben’s role as the eldest carried weight, and his voice temporarily halted the brothers’ deadly plan.

Later in the narrative, Reuben’s plan is thwarted when the other brothers sell Joseph to passing Ishmaelite traders. This event connects to the broader theme of God’s providence, as seen in Genesis 50:20, where Joseph recognises that God turned intended evil into good. Reuben’s temporary deliverance sets the stage for God’s larger purpose of preserving Israel. Even when human efforts fall short, God’s sovereign plan moves forward.

This verse encourages believers to act with compassion and to intervene on behalf of the vulnerable, even when it is difficult. It also reminds us that our efforts, though limited, can be used by God. We should seek peaceful resolutions and consider the consequences of our actions, trusting that God is sovereign over human affairs. Like Reuben, we may not be able to fix every situation, but we can still speak up for what is right.

Reuben’s intervention, though partial, shows that one voice can make a difference. It challenges us to stand against violence and to protect those in danger. At the same time, it points us to rely on God, who works through imperfect human actions to accomplish His will.
