Genesis 39:10
And it came to pass, as she spake to Joseph day by day, that he hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.
Genesis 39:10 (KJV)
Context
Joseph, the son of Jacob, had been sold into slavery and now served in the house of Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh in Egypt. Because the Lord was with Joseph, Potiphar placed him in charge of everything he owned. In this setting, Potiphar’s wife noticed Joseph and began to pressure him to sleep with her. She spoke to him day by day, making the temptation constant and personal.
Meaning
The verse says Joseph “hearkened not unto her, to lie by her, or to be with her.” His refusal was complete. He would not commit the act of adultery, and he would not even place himself near her. The Hebrew wording shows that this was not a single decision but a daily pattern of resistance. Joseph actively avoided the situation, not merely resisted when pressed. His earlier words in Genesis 39:9 give the reason: to do this would be “sin against God.” Even though no one else might see, Joseph knew that God saw, and he chose to honor God above personal gain or comfort. His position as a slave gave him little power, yet he still chose faithfulness.
Biblical connections
Joseph’s response connects to the broader biblical call to flee from sexual immorality. His refusal covered both the act and the association, teaching that guarding our actions also means guarding our closeness to temptation. The daily nature of the test shows that faithfulness requires steady reliance on God’s grace, not just a moment of strength. The narrative continues in verses 11-12, where Joseph flees from Potiphar’s wife, leaving his garment behind. His refusal remained consistent even when the temptation escalated.
Application
Joseph’s example gives practical guidance for resisting temptation. His commitment was consistent, not occasional. He did not let his guard down because the pressure was relentless. He also understood that sin against another person is ultimately sin against God. This truth can shape our choices when we face persistent temptation, whether in relationships, habits, or thoughts. We can learn to avoid compromising situations and to depend on God daily for strength. This includes guarding not only our actions but also our associations.
Reflection
Choosing righteousness may bring hardship. Joseph’s refusal led to false accusations and imprisonment. Yet the larger story shows that God remained with him and worked through those trials for good. This verse does not promise immediate reward, but it assures us that God sees and honors faithfulness. We can trust that our daily choices to obey God, even when costly, are never wasted in His purposes.
