Genesis 40:13

Yet within three days shall Pharaoh lift up thine head, and restore thee unto thy place: and thou shalt deliver Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.

Genesis 40:13 (KJV)

Joseph, sold into slavery by his brothers, now sits in an Egyptian prison. There he meets Pharaoh’s chief butler and chief baker, both troubled by dreams. Joseph asks to hear them, and he interprets the butler’s dream in this verse. Though Joseph himself is a prisoner, he does not let his own suffering stop him from serving others.

When Joseph says Pharaoh will “lift up thine head,” he means the butler will be released and restored to honor. The phrase is not about a physical gesture but about returning to a position of trust. The butler will again place Pharaoh’s cup into his hand, serving exactly as before. This is a promise of complete restoration, not just a partial change.

This restoration is a small picture of resurrection and vindication. Just as the butler is raised from prison to the palace, Christ was raised from humiliation to glory. The same divine power that lifts the lowly works through Joseph’s words. Later, the butler remembers Joseph before Pharaoh (Genesis 41), showing how God uses ordinary events to fulfill His purposes.

Joseph used his God-given gift while still in prison, not waiting for freedom. Believers can serve faithfully in hard places, trusting that God sees and will act in His time. The butler later forgot Joseph (Genesis 40:23), so this verse also warns against ingratitude. Remember those who help you, and do not forget God’s kindness. Use your gifts for God’s glory, even when your situation seems hopeless.

God’s promises are certain, and His timing is perfect. The events unfolded exactly as Joseph foretold, showing that God governs even prison walls and palace courts. This verse encourages trust when circumstances seem hopeless, for the One who lifts up the butler’s head also raises the humble and fulfills every word He speaks.
