Genesis 41:16
And Joseph answered Pharaoh, saying, It is not in me: God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.
Genesis 41:16 (KJV)
Context
Joseph stands before Pharaoh after years of slavery and imprisonment. His brothers sold him, and he was later jailed on false charges. Now Pharaoh has dreamed troubling dreams that none of Egypt’s magicians or wise men can interpret. The cupbearer remembers Joseph’s God-given gift and brings him to the king. In this moment, Joseph faces the most powerful ruler in the world, yet his answer is not about himself.
Meaning
Joseph begins with the words “It is not in me.” He does not deny that he can interpret dreams, but he refuses to claim the power as his own. He knows that wisdom and insight come from God alone. Then he promises that “God shall give Pharaoh an answer of peace.” The phrase “answer of peace” means more than a calm reply. It points to well-being, security, and wholeness. Joseph assures Pharaoh that the interpretation will bring clarity and relief to his troubled mind. His confidence rests not in his own skill but in the living God who rules over dreams, rulers, and history. Joseph’s faith remains steady under the immense pressure of standing before the most powerful man in the world.
Biblical connections
Joseph’s humility echoes the teaching that true wisdom is a gift from God. In James 1:5, believers are told to ask God for wisdom, and He gives it generously. Joseph models this dependence. He does not take credit for his gift, but redirects all glory to God. His example shows that a faithful servant points others away from himself and toward the divine source of all truth.
Application
Joseph’s response teaches us to recognize our own limits. When we face difficult questions or pressures, we can admit that the answer is not in us. We can turn to God in prayer and trust Him to provide wisdom. This does not mean we ignore our abilities or training. Rather, we use them with humility, acknowledging that every good gift comes from God. In our workplaces, families, and churches, we can speak and act with the same confidence Joseph had, knowing that God is able to give peace and clarity. His example encourages us to depend wholly on God’s sovereignty, trusting that He can bring peace even in the most challenging circumstances.
Reflection
Joseph’s words invite us to examine where we place our trust. Do we rely on our own understanding, or do we look to God first? His peace is available even in uncertain times. When we seek His wisdom, He can bring stability and harmony to our lives. Like Joseph, we can be channels of God’s peace to others, pointing them to the One who holds all things in His hands.
