Genesis 45:21

And the children of Israel did so: and Joseph gave them wagons, according to the commandment of Pharaoh, and gave them provision for the way.

Genesis 45:21 (KJV)

Genesis 45 records the emotional reunion between Joseph and the brothers who had sold him into slavery. Joseph, now governor of Egypt, reveals his identity and explains that God sent him ahead to preserve life during a severe famine. Pharaoh then commands Joseph to bring his whole family to Egypt, promising them the best of the land. This command sets the stage for the brothers’ journey back to Canaan.

In this verse, the children of Israel do exactly as Joseph instructs. Joseph gives them wagons according to Pharaoh’s commandment, and he also provides food for the journey. This shows Joseph’s careful obedience to the authority over him and his practical care for his family’s needs. His actions are immediate and complete, reflecting a faithful response to God’s plan.

The wagons and provisions are more than practical gifts. They are visible signs of Joseph’s forgiveness and of God’s abundant provision. Just as Joseph supplied everything needed for the journey, God supplies what His people need in every season. This act also fulfills the promise that God would bring Jacob’s family to Egypt, where they would grow into a great nation. The provision was sufficient for the journey both going and returning, showing God’s care through human means.

Joseph’s example teaches us to respect legitimate authority and to carry out instructions faithfully. He did not question Pharaoh’s command but acted promptly. We too can serve God by obeying those He has placed over us, when their commands align with His will. Joseph also shows us how to care for others in tangible ways. His generosity met real needs and demonstrated his love. We can follow this pattern by looking for practical ways to support family and friends, especially during difficult transitions. Such deeds are not small; they are part of God’s redemptive work.

God often works through ordinary actions like giving wagons and food. Joseph’s obedience and generosity were part of a larger plan of redemption. This encourages us to trust that our faithful, everyday deeds can be used by God to accomplish His purposes. We can rest in the knowledge that God sees our needs and provides for us, often through the hands of others. Even in times of trial, God is at work, guiding history toward deliverance.
