Genesis 46:28
And he sent Judah before him unto Joseph, to direct his face unto Goshen; and they came into the land of Goshen.
Genesis 46:28 (KJV)
Context
Genesis 46 records the journey of Jacob and his family from Canaan to Egypt during a severe famine. Joseph, now a high-ranking official in Egypt, had invited his family to settle in the fertile region of Goshen. Jacob, along with his descendants, embarked on this significant journey, where they would be reunited with Joseph.
Meaning
In this verse, Jacob sends Judah ahead to Joseph, with the purpose of directing his face unto Goshen. The phrase means to show the way, prepare for arrival, or receive directions. Jacob did not simply wander into Egypt; he sent ahead to ensure that the family would be guided to the right place. This reflects practical wisdom in making arrangements for the journey. The sending of Judah shows intentionality and careful planning, not a vague hope that things would work out. It also demonstrates Jacob’s trust in God’s leading through ordinary steps.
Biblical connections
Judah was the fourth-born son of Jacob, yet he is chosen over his elder brothers Reuben, Simeon, and Levi, who had displeased their father by their conduct. Judah had also previously shown himself to be a man of tact and affection, especially in his speech to Joseph on behalf of Benjamin (Genesis 44). This made him a fitting representative to go ahead and prepare the way. Moreover, it was through Judah’s lineage that the Messiah, Jesus Christ, would eventually come (Genesis 49:8-12).
Application
This verse illustrates the importance of sending ahead, of preparing the way, and of using faithful and capable individuals for important tasks. Just as Jacob sent Judah ahead, we can see the value of taking practical steps to fulfill God’s direction in our lives. God guides His people to the places He has prepared for them, even through the ordinary details of travel and communication.
Trusting in God’s guidance: We can learn from Jacob’s trust in sending Judah ahead. We should trust in God’s guidance and allow Him to lead us in our journey of life. God knows the best path for us and will direct our steps when we rely on Him.
Responsiveness and compassion: Judah’s act of compassion and responsibility towards Joseph teaches us the importance of caring for others and making decisions that reflect God’s love. It reminds us to act with kindness and empathy in our relationships.
God’s provision: Goshen symbolizes the provision and blessings of God. He guided Jacob’s family to a place where their needs could be met abundantly. Likewise, God provides for His people in various ways, often beyond what we can imagine or expect.
Reflection
This verse also shows God’s providence in bringing Jacob’s family to Goshen, the place where they would dwell and grow into a great nation, setting the stage for the Exodus. It highlights the theme of reconciliation and the fulfillment of God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. As believers, we are called to trust in the Lord and allow Him to guide our paths. God desires to direct our steps and lead us to the places He has prepared for us, just as He led Jacob’s family to Goshen. The careful preparation in this verse reminds us that faith and practical wisdom work together in the life of God’s people.
