Genesis 47:23

Posted on 1 August 2023

Then Ioseph said vnto the people, Behold, I haue bought you this day, and your land for Pharaoh: Loe, here is seed for you, and ye shall sow the land. Genesis 47:23 (KJV)

Historical Context: Genesis 47:23 takes place during the time when Joseph, one of the sons of Jacob (renamed Israel), was in a position of power in Egypt. Joseph had risen to prominence after being sold into slavery by his brothers. Through a series of events, he became second in command to Pharaoh and was responsible for managing the resources of Egypt during a severe famine.

Joseph’s Role: In this verse, Joseph speaks to the people of Egypt on behalf of Pharaoh. He informs them that he has acquired their land for Pharaoh but clarifies that the people themselves were not purchased outright. Instead, they became servants due to economic necessity as a result of debt incurred during the famine. This demonstrates Joseph’s authority and control over the resources of Egypt while addressing the circumstances under which the people’s status changed. Joseph also informs the people that the land of Egypt has been purchased for Pharaoh, showing his authority in overseeing the nation’s property and resources during the famine.

The Land and the People: The verse records that the people sold themselves so that they could retain ownership of the land they worked. It does not mention the provision of seed; that detail appears in earlier verses where Joseph distributes grain to the populace.

God’s Providence: Throughout the story of Joseph, we see God’s providence at work. Despite being sold into slavery and facing various challenges, God’s hand is evident in Joseph’s rise to power and his ability to save many lives during the famine. God used Joseph to bring about the preservation of his family and the fulfillment of his promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Stewardship and Leadership: Joseph’s actions in this verse highlight principles of stewardship and responsible leadership. As a steward, Joseph recognizes that the land and resources ultimately belong to God and are entrusted to him for the benefit of the people. He exercises his leadership in a way that ensures the well‑being of the Egyptians and demonstrates a commitment to their sustenance.

Application: Genesis 47:23 can teach us several lessons. First, it reminds us of the importance of being faithful stewards of the resources and positions of authority God has entrusted to us. Just as Joseph used his authority to manage the land wisely, we should use our influence and resources to benefit those around us.

Second, it highlights the value of planning and preparation. Joseph’s management of the land ensured that the people could continue to farm and survive during the famine. Similarly, we should be wise in planning for the future and taking steps to meet the needs of ourselves and others.

Lastly, the verse points to the faithfulness of God in fulfilling his promises. Despite the trials and challenges Joseph faced, God was with him every step of the way. We can take comfort in knowing that God’s providence is at work in our lives, even in difficult circumstances.

In conclusion, Genesis 47:23 showcases Joseph’s role as a wise and compassionate leader, overseeing the land of Egypt during a time of crisis. It also teaches us important lessons about stewardship, planning, and relying on God’s faithfulness.
