Genesis 49:20

Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties.

Genesis 49:20 (KJV)

This verse belongs to Jacob’s prophetic blessing over his twelve sons before his death. Each son received a specific blessing and prophecy about their future. Here Jacob speaks of Asher, the eighth son of Jacob and the second son born to him by Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid. The name Asher means “happy” or “blessed.”

“Out of Asher his bread shall be fat” indicates that Asher’s land would be fruitful, yielding abundant crops and plenty of food. “Fat bread” signifies nourishment and sustenance, implying that Asher’s descendants would enjoy fertile land and a bountiful food supply. “He shall yield royal dainties” suggests that Asher’s produce would be of exceptional quality—delicacies fit for a king or high-ranking individuals. This points to prosperity and the enjoyment of fine things.

The tribe of Asher later occupied a fertile tract in northern Israel, reaching from great Zidon to Carmel of the sea, about twenty miles in length and nine miles in breadth. The land was very fat and exceedingly fruitful, fulfilling the prophetic blessing. This connection shows how Jacob’s words were realized in the tribe’s history.

This blessing reminds us of God’s faithfulness to provide for His people. Just as Asher received abundance, believers can trust God to supply their needs and to bless the work of their hands. It also encourages us to use the resources God gives us to serve others generously, offering our best as an act of gratitude.

Asher’s portion was not only sufficient but abundant. In a world of scarcity, this verse reassures us that God delights in giving good gifts to His children. May we receive His provision with thanksgiving and share it with joy.
