Genesis 49:25
Even by the God of thy father, who shall help thee; and by the Almighty, who shall bless thee with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lieth under, blessings of the breasts, and of the womb:
Genesis 49:25 (KJV)
Context
Genesis 49 records Jacob’s blessings to his twelve sons shortly before his death. This verse belongs to the blessing given to Joseph, the son of Rachel. Jacob speaks as a dying patriarch, passing on the promises of God to his descendants.
Meaning
Jacob begins with “the God of thy father.” This title points to the God of Abraham and Isaac, the same God who made covenant promises to them. By using this name, Jacob reminds Joseph that God’s faithfulness continues from one generation to the next. This God, he says, “shall help thee.” Throughout Joseph’s life, God helped him in every trial, from slavery to prison to becoming ruler in Egypt. The promise is not vague; it is grounded in what God had already done.
Then Jacob names “the Almighty,” the Hebrew word Shaddai. This title stresses God’s unlimited power to bless. The blessings that follow cover every part of creation. “Blessings of heaven above” means rain, dew, and provision from the sky. “Blessings of the deep that lieth under” refers to springs and underground waters that make the land fruitful. “Blessings of the breasts, and of the womb” speaks of fertility, children, and family growth. Together these words show that God’s blessing reaches from the heavens to the earth and touches every area of human life.
Biblical connections
This blessing echoes the covenant God made with Abraham, promising to make his descendants numerous and to bless them (Genesis 12:2-3). Joseph’s own story shows that God’s help is real and active. Even when his brothers sold him, God was with him, turning evil into good (Genesis 50:20). The same God who helped Joseph is the God who keeps His promises to all who trust Him.
Application
This verse teaches that God is the source of all help and blessing. Believers can look to Him for both spiritual and physical needs. The blessings are not earned but given by the Almighty, who is both powerful and faithful. Just as Jacob passed this heritage of faith to Joseph, parents and leaders today can pass on a legacy of trust in God to the next generation.
Reflection
God’s blessings are comprehensive, covering every part of life. When facing trials, remember that the God of your fathers is still your helper. His power is unlimited, and His promises are sure. Let this verse encourage you to rely on Him for all things, knowing that He who blessed Joseph will also bless those who walk in faith.
