Genesis 5:2
Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.
Genesis 5 opens the historical genealogy of Adam's line by recalling humanity's divine origin. The text affirms that God created humanity as male and female according to His sovereign purpose. By directly forming both sexes, the Creator endowed men and women with equal dignity, intrinsic value, and spiritual standing before Him. Neither sex is an afterthought or inferior in nature; both are created to reflect the divine image. At the same time, God established an inherent complementarity between them, providing the foundational pattern for marriage, family life, and the fruitful continuation of the human race.
God also blessed them on the very day of their creation. This divine blessing signifies God's favor, lovingkindness, and generous provision for all of human life. It was not an earned reward, but a gift of grace bestowed upon the first human couple. This blessing encompasses physical, relational, and spiritual dimensions, directing mankind toward joyful communion with their Maker and responsible stewardship over the earth. It demonstrates that human life was purposed from its beginning to flourish under God's loving care and holy guidance.
God called their name Adam in the day when they were created. In Hebrew, this name is closely linked to adamah, which refers to the ground or dust from which man was formed, echoing Genesis 2:7. While Adam is the personal name of the first man, God also used it as a corporate name for both male and female. This shared name highlights the essential unity and common nature of the entire human family. Every person shares a single origin, a shared human nature, and direct accountability to the Creator.
The New Testament upholds this creation order as enduring truth. In Matthew 19:4, the Lord Jesus points back to God making mankind male and female at the beginning to confirm the permanence, goodness, and sacredness of marriage. Human identity and moral order are not human inventions that change with culture, but divine ordinances established at creation and confirmed by Christ.
This foundational truth provides vital guidance for everyday faith and moral clarity. Believers are called to treat every person with honor and reverence, recognising that all men and women bear equal worth before God. It anchors human identity in the sovereign Creator who made, named, and blessed humanity, giving lasting dignity and purpose to all who walk in His design.
