Genesis 6:14

Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

Genesis 6:14 (KJV)

God spoke these words to Noah after declaring that the earth was filled with violence and corruption. The flood was coming as judgment, and the ark was the means of preservation for Noah, his family, and the animals. This command shows that God both judges sin and provides a way of escape. The ark was not a ship for sailing but a floating chest or vessel designed for preservation through the flood.

The word “gopher” appears only here in the Bible, so its exact meaning is uncertain. Many scholars suggest it was a durable wood like cypress, known for resisting decay. Noah was told to make rooms, or compartments, so that people and animals could be separated and provisions stored in an orderly way. He also had to pitch it inside and outside with a tar-like substance to make it completely watertight. The Hebrew word for pitch is related to the word for covering or atonement, pointing to the idea of protection from judgment. The detailed instructions show that God’s salvation is both provided and specified by Him, requiring faithful obedience to His revealed plan.

The ark is a clear picture of salvation through Jesus Christ. Just as Noah and his family were safe inside the ark while judgment fell on the world, believers are safe in Christ from the judgment of sin. The ark was the sole place of safety; those inside were saved, while those outside faced judgment. This points to Christ as the only way of salvation.

Noah obeyed God’s specific commands even before the flood came. His obedience was practical and complete. Believers today are called to trust God’s provision and follow His instructions, even when the full outcome is not yet visible. The ark’s sealing reminds us that God’s protection is complete and reliable. God’s salvation is not based on human innovation but on His divinely ordained means.

This verse encourages us to see that God cares about the details of our lives. He gave Noah exact measurements and materials, and He guides His people with wisdom. We can rest in the certainty that God’s way of salvation is sufficient and that He is faithful to preserve those who trust Him.
