Genesis 7:16
And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the Lord shut him in.
Genesis 7:16 (KJV)
Context
Genesis 7 tells of Noah and the great flood. God saw that human wickedness had grown great, so He decided to bring judgment on the earth. Yet Noah found favor with God because he was righteous. God commanded Noah to build an ark to save his family and a remnant of every kind of land animal.
Meaning
This verse records two vital actions. First, the animals entered the ark male and female, exactly as God had commanded Noah. The phrase “male and female of all flesh” shows that each pair was one male and one female, so that every species could continue after the flood. Noah’s obedience was complete; he did not add or omit anything from God’s instructions. His careful following of God’s word was essential to his faith.
Second, “the LORD shut him in.” God Himself closed the door. This was not a human act but a divine one. By shutting the door, God sealed Noah and his family inside, marking the point of no return. The flood would soon begin, but those inside were secure. This act shows that God both commands and secures His purposes. Salvation was ultimately God’s work, not merely human effort. God’s active role assured the preservation of Noah and the animals.
Biblical connections
God’s closing of the ark door reminds us that He protects those He saves. Later, the apostle Peter compares the ark to baptism, which now saves us through the resurrection of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 3:20-21). Just as God shut Noah in, Christ secures believers in His salvation.
Application
Obedience and faith: Noah obeyed God fully, even when the task seemed impossible. We are called to trust and obey God’s Word, even when circumstances are hard.
God’s protection: As God shut the door and kept Noah safe, He watches over His faithful people. We can rest in His care.
Judgment and salvation: The flood shows that sin brings consequences, but the ark points to God’s mercy. Through Jesus, God offers deliverance from sin and eternal life to all who believe.
Reflection
God’s command and His sealing of the door work together. He gives clear instructions, and He also secures the outcome. When we obey Him, we can trust that He will complete His saving work in us.
