Context

Haggai, one of the minor prophets in the Old Testament, ministered after the Israelites returned from exile in Babylon. Around 538 BC, Cyrus the Great allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem, and they began rebuilding the temple. Yet opposition and distractions caused the work to stall. The people turned their attention to their own comfort, building paneled houses while the Lord’s house remained desolate. In this setting, God sent Haggai with a direct message to His people.

Meaning

The verse opens with “Now therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts.” The phrase “Now therefore” connects to God’s preceding argument, where He contrasts the people’s comfortable dwellings with His neglected house. “Thus saith the LORD of hosts” asserts the prophet’s authority: this is not human opinion but the word of the omnipotent God, who commands all heavenly and earthly armies.
