Haggai 2:5

“According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.”

Context:Haggai was a prophet who delivered messages from God to the Israelites who had returned to Jerusalem after their exile in Babylon. The book of Haggai is a record of the prophet’s prophecies and exhortations to the people to rebuild the temple of the Lord.

In Haggai 2:5, God is speaking through the prophet Haggai to the people, assuring them of His faithfulness to the covenant He made with their ancestors when they were delivered from Egypt. This verse highlights a few important points:

God’s Covenant:The verse begins with the phrase “According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt.” God is referring to the covenant He made with the Israelites at Mount Sinai after their deliverance from slavery in Egypt. This covenant included God’s promises to bless and protect the Israelites and to be their God, while they were to obey and worship Him faithfully.

God’s Spirit Remains:The verse continues with the statement, “so my spirit remaineth among you.” Here, God assures the people that His Spirit continues to dwell among them. The presence of God’s Spirit is a source of comfort, guidance, and empowerment for His people. Despite the challenging circumstances they were facing, God wanted them to know that He had not abandoned them and that His Spirit was still with them.

Fear Not:The verse concludes with the exhortation, “fear ye not.” This is a call to courage and trust in God. The people were facing various obstacles and discouragements in rebuilding the temple, but God encourages them not to be afraid. The presence of God’s Spirit should provide them with the confidence and strength they need to persevere.

This verse in Haggai reminds us of God’s faithfulness to His covenant and His enduring presence with His people. It encourages us to trust in God’s promises and to find courage in His Spirit, even in the face of challenges or difficult circumstances.
