Hebrews 10:12

Posted on 18 May at 14:28
Listen to this article

“But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God.”

Context:The book of Hebrews is an epistle written to Jewish believers who were facing persecution and the temptation to return to their former religious practices. The author of Hebrews emphasizes the superiority of Jesus Christ and His once-for-all sacrifice compared to the old covenant sacrifices under the Mosaic Law.

Explanation and Analysis:

“But this man”: Refers to Jesus Christ, who is the central figure and the focus of the book of Hebrews. The author presents Jesus as superior to angels, Moses, and the Levitical priesthood.

“After he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever”: This refers to Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross. The phrase emphasizes the completeness and finality of Jesus’ sacrifice. Unlike the repeated animal sacrifices of the old covenant, Jesus offered Himself once for all, paying the price for sin and providing eternal redemption for all who believe in Him (Hebrews 9:26-28).

“Sat down on the right hand of God”: This phrase emphasizes the exaltation and victory of Jesus. In Jewish culture, sitting down indicates a completed work or a position of authority. Jesus, having completed His work of redemption, ascended to the right hand of God the Father, signifying His position of honor, authority, and intercession on behalf of believers (Hebrews 1:3, Hebrews 8:1).

Key Lessons and Applications:

  • The sufficiency of Christ’s sacrifice:Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is the only sacrifice that can fully atone for sin. As believers, we can find assurance and confidence in the fact that His sacrifice was once-for-all, accomplishing forgiveness and salvation for those who put their faith in Him.
  • The superiority of Jesus:The author of Hebrews emphasizes the superiority of Jesus Christ over any other religious system or human effort to attain salvation. Jesus is the ultimate High Priest and the mediator of a better covenant (Hebrews 8:6). We are called to place our trust in Him alone for salvation and not to rely on our own works or the rituals of the old covenant.
  • Rest in the finished work of Christ:Jesus’ seating at the right hand of God signifies His completed work. As believers, we can rest in the assurance that Jesus’ sacrifice was sufficient, and we no longer need to strive or offer sacrifices to earn God’s favor. Instead, we can approach God with confidence, knowing that through Jesus, we have been reconciled to Him.
  • The ongoing intercession of Christ:Jesus’ position at the right hand of God also indicates His ongoing intercessory role on our behalf. He is continually advocating for us before the Father, providing us with grace and help in our times of need (Hebrews 4:14-16). This truth should encourage us to approach God boldly in prayer and seek His mercy and grace.

In summary, Hebrews 10:12 highlights the uniqueness and sufficiency of Jesus’ sacrifice, His exalted position at the right hand of God, and the implications for believers. It reminds us of the finality and completion of Jesus’ work on the cross, urging us to place our faith in Him, rest in His finished work, and approach God with confidence and assurance.
