Hebrews 10:24

Posted on 18 May at 14:28
Listen to this article

“And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works.”

Context:The book of Hebrews was written to encourage Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and struggling with their faith. It emphasizes the supremacy of Christ and the superiority of the new covenant over the old covenant.

“Let us consider one another”:The author of Hebrews urges believers to actively think about and pay attention to one another. This call to “consider” goes beyond mere observation and suggests a deliberate intentionality in understanding and empathizing with fellow believers.

“To provoke unto love”:The Greek word translated as “provoke” (paroxysmos) carries the idea of stirring up, stimulating, or inciting. In this context, it means to spur or encourage one another toward acts of love. This verse highlights the importance of fostering a loving environment within the Christian community.

“And to good works”:Alongside provoking one another to love, the author emphasizes the need to encourage each other in the pursuit of good works. Good works refer to acts of righteousness and obedience to God’s commands, which demonstrate genuine faith.

The underlying principle:Hebrews 10:24 emphasizes the importance of mutual encouragement and support within the Christian community. Believers are called to actively consider and intentionally stimulate one another towards love and good works. This verse encourages Christians to be mindful of how they can uplift and motivate others to live out their faith.

  • Cultivating a loving community:We should strive to create an environment where love is actively practised and demonstrated among believers. This involves showing kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and selflessness.
  • Encouraging good works:We should motivate and support one another to live out our faith through acts of righteousness and obedience to God’s Word. This includes serving others, spreading the Gospel, and fulfilling our individual callings in Christ.
  • Intentional relationships:We should intentionally consider the needs, struggles, and joys of our fellow believers. By actively engaging with one another, we can offer support, prayer, counsel, and practical help.

Hebrews 10:24 serves as a reminder that Christianity is not meant to be lived in isolation. It encourages believers to be mindful of their fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, intentionally promoting love and good works within the community. Through mutual encouragement and support, we can grow in our faith and reflect the love of Christ to the world.
