Hebrews 11:16
But now they desire a better countrey, that is, an heauenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to bee called their God: for he hath prepared for thē a city. Hebrews 11:16 (KJV)
Hebrews 11 is often referred to as the “Hall of Faith” chapter because it highlights the faith of various Old Testament figures. In verse 16 the author focuses on the faith and desires of these individuals.
The verse begins by stating that the people mentioned in Hebrews 11 have a desire for a better country. This indicates that they were looking for a homeland, a place where they could experience true fulfillment and rest. However, the author clarifies that the country they long for is not an earthly one but a heavenly one, emphasizing that their ultimate hope and longing are for a heavenly, eternal dwelling place with God.
The phrase “wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God” signifies the intimate relationship between God and those who have such faith and desire for a heavenly country. It implies that God is not embarrassed or reluctant to be associated with them because of their unwavering faith and hope in Him. Their faith is commendable, and God recognizes them as His own.
The verse concludes by affirming that God has prepared a city for these faithful individuals. This city can be understood metaphorically as the New Jerusalem, the heavenly city described in the book of Revelation, or more broadly as a symbol of the eternal dwelling place and blessings that God has prepared for His faithful followers.
Hebrews 11:16 encourages believers to have a heavenly perspective and to set their hearts on the things above. It reminds us that our ultimate citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20) and that our hope and desire should be directed toward the eternal and glorious future God has prepared for us.
This verse also challenges us to examine our faith and desires. Are we seeking after the things of this world or longing for the heavenly country? Are we living in such a way that God is not ashamed to be called our God? These questions prompt us to evaluate our priorities and ensure that our faith is firmly rooted in God’s promises and our ultimate hope lies in Him.
Overall, Hebrews 11:16 encourages us to embrace a heavenly perspective, live by faith, and set our hearts on the eternal blessings that God has prepared for those who love Him.
