Hebrews 11:26
Esteeming the reproch of Christ greater riches then the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect vnto the recompense of the reward. Hebrews 11:26 (KJV)
Hebrews 11 is commonly called the “Hall of Faith” because it records the faith of many Old Testament heroes. The author presents these examples to encourage and inspire believers to persevere in their own walk with God. In verse 26 the focus turns to Moses, whose response to the Egyptian situation illustrates a profound trust in God’s promises.
The phrase “Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches” links Moses’ experience in Egypt with the future suffering and reproach that Jesus Christ would endure. By faith Moses chose to identify with God’s mission rather than cling to the temporary comforts and pleasures of Egypt. This choice shows his understanding that the eternal value of following God far outweighs any earthly wealth.
Moses had been raised as Pharaoh’s adopted grandson and therefore enjoyed unrestricted access to the wealth, splendor, and luxury of the Egyptian kingdom. Yet he recognized that those earthly treasures were fleeting and could not compare with the everlasting blessings that come from obedience to God’s will.
The clause “for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward” reveals that Moses kept his eyes fixed on the future reward awaiting him in heaven. He understood that enduring reproach and hardship for the sake of Christ would bring an eternal reward far surpassing anything Egypt could offer. His faith enabled him to look beyond his present circumstances and trust in the ultimate recompense God had prepared.
Application: Hebrews 11:26 challenges each believer to examine personal priorities. Like Moses, we are called to value eternal riches over temporary pleasures and to be willing to endure reproach or hardship for Christ. By fixing our eyes on the promised heavenly reward, we can live with confidence that our faithfulness will be rewarded in the end, rather than being lured by fleeting worldly allurements.
