Hebrews 11:5

Posted on 18 May at 14:28
Listen to this article

“By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.”

Context:Hebrews 11 is commonly referred to as the “faith chapter” or the “hall of faith.” It highlights the faith of many individuals throughout the Old Testament and emphasizes the importance of faith in the lives of believers. Hebrews 11:5 specifically focuses on Enoch, a man of faith.

Understanding Enoch:Enoch was a descendant of Adam and the father of Methuselah. He lived during a time when humanity had strayed far from God. Despite the prevailing wickedness around him, Enoch maintained a close relationship with God and walked in righteousness.

Enoch’s Translation:The verse states that “By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death.” This means that Enoch did not experience physical death like most human beings. Instead, God took him directly to heaven. Enoch’s exceptional faith and his close relationship with God resulted in his unique destiny.

Pleasing God:The verse further explains that Enoch pleased God before his translation. Enoch’s faith and righteousness were so remarkable that he found favor in the eyes of God. Enoch’s life serves as an example of what it means to please God through faith.

Lessons from Enoch’s Life:

  • Faith in a Corrupt World:Enoch’s life demonstrates that it is possible to live a faithful and righteous life even in the midst of a corrupt society. Despite the prevailing wickedness, Enoch chose to walk with God and please Him.
  • The Power of Faith:Enoch’s translation illustrates the power of faith. By trusting in God, Enoch experienced a supernatural transformation and was spared from the experience of physical death.
  • Pleasing God:Enoch’s life reminds us that our primary goal should be to please God. When we walk in faith, seeking to please Him, we can experience His favor and blessings in our lives.

Application:

  • Cultivate a Close Relationship with God:Like Enoch, we should strive to maintain a close relationship with God through prayer, reading His Word, and seeking His presence in our daily lives.
  • Live Righteously:Enoch’s life challenges us to live uprightly, even in a world that may be filled with ungodliness. Let us stand firm in our faith and be a positive influence on those around us.
  • Walk by Faith:Enoch’s faith resulted in extraordinary blessings. Let us trust in God, even when circumstances seem difficult, knowing that He is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we can ask or think.

Remember, Hebrews 11:6 follows this verse and says, “But without faith, it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” May the example of Enoch’s faith inspire us to walk with God and please Him in our own lives.
