Hebrews 13:20

Listen to this article

“Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant”

Context:The book of Hebrews was written to Jewish believers who were facing persecution and considering returning to their former Jewish practices. The author of Hebrews encourages them to hold fast to their faith in Jesus Christ, emphasizing His superiority over the Old Testament system of sacrifices and priesthood. Hebrews 13 contains practical exhortations for Christian living and concludes with a benediction.

“Now the God of peace”:The verse begins by acknowledging God as the God of peace. This title highlights God’s nature as a source of peace, harmony, and reconciliation. It emphasizes that God desires peace between Himself and humanity, and also among His people.

“that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus”:This phrase refers to the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It affirms the central Christian belief in the resurrection, which is foundational to our faith. Jesus’ resurrection is a powerful demonstration of God’s power, victory over sin and death, and the fulfillment of prophecies. It signifies the completion of Jesus’ redemptive work on the cross and His triumph over the forces of darkness.

“that great shepherd of the sheep”:Jesus is described as the great shepherd of the sheep. This metaphor portrays Jesus as the caring, guiding, and protecting shepherd who watches over His flock. In John 10:11, Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.” As the shepherd, Jesus provides for His people, leads them in the right paths, and watches over their well‑being.

“through the blood of the everlasting covenant”:This phrase refers to the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross, where His blood was shed to establish the new covenant between God and humanity. The Old Testament covenants were temporary, but the covenant established through Jesus’ blood is everlasting. This covenant provides forgiveness of sins, reconciliation with God, and the promise of eternal life for all who believe in Jesus Christ.

Overall, Hebrews 13:20 emphasizes the work of God through Jesus Christ in bringing peace, redemption, and eternal life to believers. It highlights the resurrection of Jesus, His role as the shepherd, and the significance of His sacrificial death as the foundation of the everlasting covenant. This verse serves as a reminder of God’s faithfulness, the sufficiency of Christ’s work, and the assurance of peace and eternal life for those who trust in Him.
