Hebrews 13:4

Listen to this article

“Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.”

This verse is part of the concluding exhortations in the book of Hebrews. It touches on the topic of marriage and God’s perspective on it. Let’s break it down further:

“Marriage is honourable in all”: The author of Hebrews states that marriage is honorable and worthy of respect in every way. This emphasizes the sanctity and value of the marital union. The institution of marriage is established by God and has a special significance in His design for human relationships.

“And the bed undefiled”: This phrase refers to the physical intimacy between a husband and wife within the bounds of marriage. The “bed” here symbolizes the sexual relationship within marriage. It implies that the sexual relationship between a husband and wife is pure, permissible, and untainted when kept within the confines of the marriage covenant.

“But whoremongers and adulterers God will judge”: This part of the verse serves as a warning against sexual immorality. God holds those who engage in sexual immorality, such as whoremongers (those who engage in sexual promiscuity) and adulterers (those who have sexual relations outside of their marriage), accountable for their actions. The implication is that these actions are contrary to God’s design and will face His judgment.

Overall, Hebrews 13:4 emphasizes the importance of upholding the sanctity of marriage and maintaining sexual purity within the confines of the marriage covenant. It encourages believers to honor and respect the marital union while cautioning against engaging in sexual immorality.

It’s worth noting that while this verse specifically addresses the topic of marriage and sexual purity, the broader context of the book of Hebrews contains numerous exhortations and teachings on various aspects of the Christian faith, including the supremacy of Christ, the importance of faith, and the need to persevere in following Him.
