Hebrews 2:15

Listen to this article

“And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”

Context:The book of Hebrews is a letter written to Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and contemplating a return to Judaism. The author emphasizes the superiority of Christ and the new covenant. Hebrews 2:15 comes in the midst of a passage where the author discusses the incarnation of Jesus Christ and His purpose to save humanity.

Fear of Death:The verse begins by addressing those who were “subject to bondage” due to the “fear of death.” Death is a universal reality that brings fear and uncertainty to many people. Before coming to Christ, believers were enslaved by the fear of death, unsure of what lies beyond and unable to escape its grip.

Deliverance:The verse speaks of Jesus’s mission to deliver those who are in bondage to the fear of death. Through His death and resurrection, Jesus conquered death and provides deliverance to those who trust in Him. He offers freedom from the fear and power of death, granting eternal life to those who believe in Him.

Lifetime of Bondage:The phrase “all their lifetime” highlights the duration of the bondage caused by the fear of death. This emphasizes that the fear of death is not a fleeting concern but a lifelong burden. Without Christ, individuals remain under its influence, trapped in spiritual and emotional bondage.

Significance:Hebrews 2:15 highlights the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, who offers freedom from the fear of death. It emphasizes that through faith in Christ, believers can be liberated from the fear and bondage associated with mortality. This liberation allows Christians to live with confidence, hope, and assurance of eternal life.

Application:As believers, we can find encouragement in Hebrews 2:15. It reminds us that Christ has conquered death and offers us deliverance from its power. We no longer need to be enslaved by the fear of death but can place our trust in Jesus, knowing that He has secured our eternal salvation.
