Hebrews 2:6

Listen to this article

But one in a certaine place testified, saying: What is man, that thou art mindfull of him: or the Sonne of man that thou visitest him? Hebrews 2:6 (KJV)

The book of Hebrews was written to a group of Jewish believers who were facing persecution and considering returning to their former Jewish traditions. The author of Hebrews presents Jesus as the superior fulfilment of the Old Testament law and covenant. In this particular verse, the author quotes from Psalm 8:4-6, highlighting the superiority of Jesus over angels.

The verse begins by saying, “But one in a certain place testified.” This is a reference to King David, the author of Psalm 8, which the author of Hebrews quotes from. David, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, posed a question to God, expressing wonder and amazement at the special attention and care God gives to humanity.

What is man?: David asks, “What is man, that thou art mindful of him?” This question reflects a sense of awe and humility before the greatness of God. It acknowledges the insignificance of humanity in comparison to the vastness of the universe and the majesty of God. Despite our smallness, God is mindful of us, indicating His deep care and concern for mankind.

Son of Man: David also wonders, “or the son of man, that thou visitest him?” This phrase “son of man” is a Messianic title, which Jesus often used to refer to Himself. In this context, it points to Jesus as the ultimate fulfilment of humanity’s purpose and destiny. God not only remembers and cares for humanity but also visits us in the person of Jesus Christ.

The author of Hebrews applies this Psalm to Jesus, emphasising His superiority over angels. In the following verses (Hebrews 2:7-9), the author explains that although humanity was made lower than angels, Jesus, as the Son of Man, was crowned with glory and honour. Jesus, through His incarnation, death, and resurrection, fully identified with humanity and accomplished salvation on our behalf.

Application: Hebrews 2:6 reminds us of the incredible love and care that God has for humanity. Despite our weaknesses and limitations, God is mindful of us and desires a relationship with us. Through Jesus, God not only remembers us but also visits us, offering salvation and the hope of eternal life.
