Hebrews 3:13

Listen to this article

“But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”

Hebrews 3:13 carries an important message about the significance of mutual encouragement and accountability within the Christian community. To better understand this verse, it is helpful to examine its context within the book of Hebrews.

The author of Hebrews is addressing a community of Jewish believers who were facing various challenges and temptations. One of the key themes throughout the book is the superiority of Christ and the new covenant He established over the old covenant and the Mosaic Law.

In Hebrews 3, the author draws a parallel between the Israelites’ rebellion in the wilderness and the need for the believers to persevere in their faith. The author encourages the readers to hold fast to their confidence in Christ, warning them not to harden their hearts like their ancestors did during the time of testing in the wilderness (Hebrews 3:7-11).

In verse 13, the author provides practical advice on how to avoid the hardening of the heart. They emphasise the importance of daily exhortation and mutual encouragement among believers. The phrase “exhort one another” implies a call to motivate, counsel, and encourage fellow believers. This mutual exhortation strengthens the bonds within the community and helps to prevent spiritual complacency and the deceitfulness of sin.

The phrase “while it is called Today” highlights the urgency and timeliness of the exhortation. Each day is an opportunity to uplift and support one another, and it should not be delayed. The verse reminds believers to seize the present moment and actively engage in building up the body of Christ.

The warning against the “deceitfulness of sin” is a reminder that sin can be subtle and alluring. It can lead to a hardening of the heart and a drifting away from the truth. By regularly encouraging one another and staying accountable, believers can guard against the deceitfulness of sin and maintain a firm commitment to their faith.
