“For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise, And God did rest the seventh day from all his works.”
Context:The book of Hebrews is a letter written to Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and contemplating a return to Judaism. The author of Hebrews emphasizes the superiority of Christ and His work, urging the readers to persevere in their faith.
Understanding the verse:
- “For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day”:The author refers to a specific place in the Scriptures where God spoke about the seventh day. This is a reference to Genesis 2:2, which describes God resting on the seventh day after creating the heavens and the earth.
- “And God did rest the seventh day from all his works”:This phrase highlights the fact that God ceased from His creative work on the seventh day, indicating a completion and satisfaction with His work.
- The Sabbath rest:
- The reference to God resting on the seventh day points to the institution of the Sabbath. God set apart the seventh day as a day of rest and blessed it (Genesis 2:3). The Sabbath became an important part of Jewish law and observance (Exodus 20:8-11).
- The Sabbath rest also symbolises a spiritual rest found in God. In Hebrews, the author discusses a concept of entering into God’s rest (Hebrews 4:1-11). This rest is not merely physical but a spiritual rest in which believers find true peace and satisfaction in Christ.
- The significance for believers:
- The rest mentioned in Hebrews goes beyond the literal observance of the Sabbath. It points to the ultimate rest that is found in Christ. Through faith in Jesus, believers enter into a rest from striving to earn salvation through works.
- Just as God rested from His works, believers can find rest in Christ’s finished work on the cross. We no longer need to work to earn God’s favour because Jesus has accomplished our salvation.
- This verse reminds believers of the importance of resting in God’s grace, trusting in His provision, and finding peace in His completed work.
