Hebrews 5:1

Listen to this article

“For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins.”

Context and Background:The book of Hebrews is a letter written to Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and considering turning away from their faith in Jesus Christ. The author of Hebrews presents Jesus as the ultimate high priest, superior to the Levitical priesthood established under the Old Covenant.

High Priests Ordained for Men:In Hebrews 5:1, the writer acknowledges the role of the high priest within the Jewish community. The high priest was chosen from among the people to represent them before God and to offer sacrifices for their sins. The primary purpose of the high priest was to mediate between God and the people, acting as a bridge between them.

Jesus as the Perfect High Priest:While recognizing the importance of the human high priest, the author of Hebrews also highlights the superiority of Jesus Christ as the ultimate high priest. Jesus, being both fully God and fully man, surpasses the limitations of the earthly priesthood. Unlike the human high priests, Jesus is sinless and able to offer the perfect sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins.

Offering Gifts and Sacrifices for Sins:The verse mentions that the high priest offers both gifts and sacrifices for sins. In the Old Testament, the high priest would offer various sacrifices on behalf of the people to atone for their transgressions. These sacrifices were temporary and had to be repeated regularly. However, Jesus, as the perfect high priest, offered Himself as the ultimate sacrifice once and for all, providing eternal redemption for all who believe in Him.

Application:

  • Recognition of Jesus’ priesthood:Hebrews invites believers to recognize Jesus’ unique role as the high priest who intercedes for us before God. We can approach God confidently through Jesus, knowing that He understands our weaknesses and sympathizes with our struggles (Hebrews 4:15).
  • Appreciation of Jesus’ sacrifice:The verse reminds us of the magnitude of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. His offering of Himself as the perfect sacrifice demonstrates God’s love and grace toward us. We should respond with gratitude, embracing the forgiveness and salvation offered through Christ.
  • Our priesthood:In 1 Peter 2:9, believers are referred to as a royal priesthood. As followers of Christ, we are called to represent Him to the world and intercede for others through prayer. We are to offer ourselves as living sacrifices, surrendering our lives to God’s service (Romans 12:1).
  • Pursuit of holiness:Hebrews emphasizes the importance of personal holiness and growth in the Christian walk. In the following verses, the writer rebukes the Hebrew Christians for their spiritual immaturity. We are encouraged to progress in our faith, moving beyond the elementary teachings and striving for spiritual maturity (Hebrews 5:11-14).

Remember to read the entire book of Hebrews in context to gain a deeper understanding of the author’s message and the significance of Jesus’ priesthood.
