Hebrews 6:13

Posted on 18 May at 14:29

“For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself.”

Context:To better understand this verse, it’s essential to consider the broader context of the passage. Hebrews 6:13-20 speaks about God’s faithfulness to His promises and the assurance we have as believers in Christ.

Promise to Abraham:The verse specifically mentions God’s promise to Abraham. This refers to the covenant God made with Abraham, where He promised to bless him, make him a great nation, and give him land (Genesis 12:1-3, Genesis 15:1-6). God’s promises to Abraham were a key part of His plan to bless all nations through the lineage of Abraham, leading to the birth of Jesus Christ.

God’s Unchanging Nature:The verse emphasizes that when God made this promise to Abraham, He could swear by no greater, so He swore by Himself. This highlights God’s unchanging nature and His ultimate authority. Since there is no one greater than God, He confirms His promise by His own character, which is steadfast and trustworthy.

Trustworthiness of God’s Promises:The author of Hebrews underscores the certainty and reliability of God’s promises. By swearing by Himself, God demonstrates the immutability of His word. His promises are sure, and He is faithful to fulfill them. As believers, we can have confidence in the promises of God because He is faithful and trustworthy.

Application:The passage encourages us to hold fast to our hope in Christ. Just as God was faithful to fulfill His promises to Abraham, we can trust that He will be faithful to fulfill His promises to us as well. Our hope in Christ is an anchor for our souls, firm and secure (Hebrews 6:19). We are called to walk in faith, relying on God’s promises and His unchanging nature.
