Hebrews 7:16
“Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life.”
Context:The book of Hebrews was written to a Jewish‑Christian audience, addressing the supremacy of Christ and His fulfilment of the Old Testament law and sacrificial system. In Hebrews 7, the author explores the priesthood of Melchizedek and contrasts it with the Levitical priesthood.
The contrast between two priesthoods:In Hebrews 7:11‑15, the author explains that the Levitical priesthood, established under the Mosaic Law, was temporary and imperfect. However, Jesus, being from the tribe of Judah, rather than Levi, establishes a new and superior priesthood in the order of Melchizedek. This transition from the Levitical priesthood to the priesthood of Christ is the focal point of Hebrews 7:16.
Made after the power of an endless life:In this verse, the author emphasises that Jesus’s priesthood is not based on the “law of a carnal commandment.” The Levitical priesthood operated under the law, with priests appointed based on genealogy and temporary in their roles. However, Jesus’s appointment as a priest is not based on the law but on “the power of an endless life.”
The significance of an endless life:Jesus, being the eternal Son of God, has a life that is not subject to death or decay. He conquered death through His resurrection and now holds an indestructible life (Hebrews 7:16b). This eternal life is the source of His priesthood, enabling Him to intercede for believers forever (Hebrews 7:24‑25).
Application:Hebrews 7:16 encourages believers to place their faith in Jesus Christ, who is the perfect and eternal High Priest. Unlike the Levitical priests, His priesthood is not limited by human frailty or subject to change. He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him (Hebrews 7:25). Therefore, we can approach God with confidence, knowing that Jesus’s intercession is continuous and effective.
In conclusion, Hebrews 7:16 highlights the superiority of Jesus’s priesthood over the Levitical priesthood. His appointment as a priest is not based on the Mosaic Law but on the power of an endless life. This truth assures believers that Jesus is an eternal and perfect High Priest who can intercede for us continuously.
