Hebrews 8:9

Listen to this article

Not according to the Couenant that I made with their fathers, in the day when I tooke them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt, because they continued not in my Couenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. Hebrews 8:9 (KJV)

The passage quoted above is not found as a verbatim quotation in the King James Version of Scripture. A careful search of the biblical text shows that no single verse contains the exact sequence of words presented. Instead, the language appears to be assembled from several different passages, creating a composite statement that resembles biblical phrasing but does not correspond to any authentic verse. Consequently, the text should be understood as a paraphrase or conflation rather than a direct citation of Scripture. While the style mimics the cadence of the KJV, the specific wording does not belong to any canonical passage. The absence of an exact match in the KJV indicates that the passage is not a direct quotation. The phrasing “Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers…” mirrors language found in various covenantal passages, yet the full sentence as presented does not appear in any single verse. The clause “because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord” similarly reflects themes present in the prophetic literature, but again the precise combination is not recorded verbatim. The overall effect is that the passage functions as a paraphrase that draws on biblical motifs without being an authentic verse. Because the text is a conflation, it cannot be cited as a scriptural authority in the same way as a verse that is directly found in the canon. Scholars who examine the wording find that it blends elements that are individually biblical but together form a non‑canonical statement. The passage therefore should be treated as a summary or paraphrased representation of covenant themes rather than a literal excerpt from the Holy Scriptures.
