Hebrews 9:27

Listen to this article

“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”

This verse is found in the New Testament book of Hebrews, which is believed to be written by the apostle Paul or a disciple of Paul. Hebrews is a letter written to Jewish Christians, emphasising the supremacy of Christ and the superiority of the New Covenant over the Old Covenant.

Hebrews 9:27 conveys an important theological truth regarding the nature of human existence and the future judgment. Let’s break down the verse to gain a deeper understanding:

“And as it is appointed unto men once to die”: This phrase emphasises the universality of death. Death is a certainty for every human being. It is an appointment that all individuals will eventually face. This verse implies that death is an integral part of the human experience, and no one can escape it.

“But after this the judgment”: Following death, according to this verse, comes judgment. This statement implies that after death, there is an assessment or evaluation of an individual’s life. This judgment determines the eternal destiny of each person.

It is important to note that the specific details of the judgment mentioned in this verse are not provided. However, throughout the Bible, there are references to different types of judgment, including the judgment of believers (2 Corinthians 5:10) and the final judgment of all people (Revelation 20:11-15). The New Testament teaches that this final judgment will determine the eternal fate of individuals, either eternal life with God or eternal separation from Him.

Hebrews 9:27 serves as a reminder of the brevity of life and the subsequent accountability before God. It underscores the significance of making deliberate choices during our earthly existence, knowing that there will be a day of reckoning. It encourages believers to live in light of this truth, seeking to honour God and live in accordance with His will.

In summary, Hebrews 9:27 conveys the certainty of death for all individuals and highlights the subsequent judgment that follows. It reminds us of the importance of living with a sense of accountability and striving to align our lives with God’s purposes.
