Hosea 11:12

Ephraim compasseth me about with lies, and the house of Israel with deceit: but Judah yet ruleth with God, and is faithful with the saints.

Hosea 11:12 (KJV)

Hosea delivered God’s message to the northern kingdom of Israel during a period of spiritual decline and idolatry. The people are described through the symbols of Ephraim and the house of Israel as surrounding God with lies and deceit, indicating they had turned from His commandments and become entangled in deception.

In contrast, Judah is noted as still ruling with God and remaining faithful to the saints. The Hebrew verb translated “rule” can also mean “walk” or “go,” and many translations render it as “walks with God.” The phrase “with the saints” (Hebrew: qedoshim) is understood by many translators as a reference to God as the Holy One, though some render it as “holy ones” or “holy things.” Judah represents the southern kingdom, which had not yet fallen into complete idolatry and rebellion.

This verse serves as a transition into Hosea 12, which continues the indictment of Ephraim. The immediate context of Hosea 11 emphasizes God’s tender love for Israel as His son, His calling them out of Egypt, and His grief over their persistent unfaithfulness. Verse 12 highlights the severity of Israel’s sin in light of God’s covenant love. The mention of Judah provides a glimmer of hope and a standard of faithfulness, though later chapters show that Judah also falls into sin.

The passage reveals the consequences of unfaithfulness and idolatry while showing the lingering presence of faithfulness among a remnant. The text calls us to examine our own hearts, resist the temptations of falsehood and deception, and seek a genuine relationship with God. We are invited to acknowledge any areas of deception and strive to align ourselves with God’s will.

The contrast between Ephraim and Judah serves as a call to examine one’s own walk with God, to avoid hypocrisy and deceit, and to remain faithful to the Holy One.
