Hosea 13:2

Posted on 18 May at 14:54
Listen to this article

“And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.”

Certainly! Here’s a Bible study on Hosea 13:2 (KJV) says, “And now they sin more and more, and have made them molten images of their silver, and idols according to their own understanding, all of it the work of the craftsmen: they say of them, Let the men that sacrifice kiss the calves.”

Historical Context:Hosea was a prophet in the northern kingdom of Israel during the 8th century BCE. At this time, Israel had turned away from God and was steeped in idolatry and wickedness. The people had forsaken the Lord and were engaging in idol worship.

  • Idolatry and Sin:

In this verse, Hosea describes the worsening spiritual condition of the people of Israel. He accuses them of sinning more and more, which refers to their increasing rebellion against God’s commandments. One of the manifestations of their sin was the creation of molten images and idols made of silver. These idols were created by craftsmen and were fashioned according to the people’s own understanding and desires.

Worshiping False Gods:The people of Israel had abandoned the true worship of God and turned to idols instead. Instead of relying on the one true God who had delivered them from Egypt and provided for them, they had chosen to worship these lifeless objects. The reference to “kissing the calves” likely refers to a common practice among idolaters, where they would kiss or pay homage to the idols they worshipped.

God’s Displeasure:Through Hosea, God expresses His displeasure with the people’s actions. God had made it clear in the Ten Commandments that the Israelites were not to make or worship any graven images (Exodus 20:4-6). By creating idols and worshipping them, the people were breaking this commandment and rejecting the true God.

Lessons for Today:

  • Hosea 13:2 serves as a warning against idolatry and the dangers of turning away from God. Though the specific context is focused on physical idols, idolatry can take various forms in our lives today. Anything that we prioritise or worship above God can become an idol in our hearts. It may be wealth, power, relationships, or even our own desires and ambitions.

The verse reminds us of the importance of staying faithful to God and not allowing anything to take His place in our lives. It is a call to examine our hearts and ensure that we are not being lured into worshipping false gods or relying on our own understanding instead of seeking God’s wisdom and guidance.

In summary, Hosea 13:2 highlights the people of Israel’s descent into idolatry and sin. It serves as a reminder for us today to guard our hearts against idolatry and to remain faithful to the one true God.
