Hosea 4:6

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

Hosea 4:6 (KJV)

The book of Hosea records the prophet’s ministry to the northern kingdom of Israel during a time of widespread idolatry, immorality, and spiritual apostasy. The people had turned away from the LORD and forgotten His laws, and the opening of this chapter charges them with failing to acknowledge Him as their God (Hosea 4:1).

The verse begins, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” This knowledge is not merely intellectual information but a deep, relational understanding of God and His ways. The people were ignorant of God’s laws and His character, and this ignorance led them astray.

The verse continues, “because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee.” The people had willfully rejected the instruction of God, turning away from His commandments. The parallel structure of the verse shows that rejecting knowledge is the same as forgetting the law of God. As a consequence, God declares that He will reject them, signifying severe judgment and the withdrawal of His favour.

God further states, “that thou shalt be no priest to me.” Israel had been called to be a kingdom of priests, but because the priests failed to teach God’s law, the nation fell into ruin. Their rejection of knowledge meant the loss of their priestly status and its privileges.

The verse concludes, “seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.” The people’s disregard for His commandments brought judgment not only on themselves but also on future generations. The mention of forgetting their children emphasises the severity of the consequences.

Hosea 4:6 warns against the dangers of spiritual ignorance and the willful rejection of God’s knowledge. It reminds us that knowing God is not passive; we must actively seek understanding and obey His Word. Neglecting Scripture leads to spiritual decay, while embracing it keeps us in a right relationship with Him.

Consider how you treat the knowledge of God found in Scripture. Do you treasure it, or have you grown careless toward it? The remedy for destruction is to humbly receive and obey the knowledge of God, allowing it to shape your life and your legacy.
