Hosea 5:7
They have dealt treacherously against the Lord: for they have begotten strange children: now shall a month devour them with their portions.
Hosea 5:7 (KJV)
Context
Hosea 5:7 comes from the prophet Hosea, who ministered to the northern kingdom of Israel during a time of spiritual and moral decline. His prophecies warn of judgment and call the people to repentance.
In this verse, Hosea describes Israel’s treacherous behavior toward the Lord. The people had turned away from God’s commandments, engaging in idolatry and various forms of wickedness.
Meaning
“They have dealt treacherously against the LORD” points to a betrayal of the covenant relationship. God had chosen Israel as His special people, and their idolatry was spiritual adultery against Him.
“Begotten strange children” is metaphorical, not literal. It refers to the consequences of Israel’s unfaithfulness—their idolatrous practices corrupted their families and legacy, producing a generation that did not honor God.
“Now shall a month devour them with their portions” is a prophecy of swift and thorough judgment. The “month” likely refers to the New Moon festivals, which the people celebrated as part of their idolatrous worship. Their religious observances would become the occasion of their ruin. The “portions” are their possessions, wealth, and resources, all of which would be consumed.
Application
Hosea 5:7 warns that religious activity without covenant faithfulness is empty. Israel’s festivals and sacrifices could not shield them from judgment because their hearts were unfaithful. For believers today, outward worship must be matched by inward loyalty to God.
Reflection
Yet the message of Hosea extends beyond judgment. The book also portrays God’s steadfast love and His longing for His people to return to Him in repentance. Even in warning, God calls His people back to Himself.
