Isaiah 10:13

“For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man.”

Context:Isaiah 10 is a chapter that pronounces God’s judgment upon Assyria, the nation that was used as a tool in His hand to punish Israel for their disobedience. However, Assyria became proud and attributed its success and accomplishments to its own strength and wisdom, instead of recognising God’s sovereignty.

Pride and Self-Exaltation:The verse highlights the arrogant mindset of the Assyrian king. He boasts about his own strength, wisdom, and prudence, taking credit for his military conquests and the plundering of nations. This arrogance and self-exaltation go against God’s principles of humility and acknowledging Him as the source of all strength and wisdom.

God’s Sovereignty:The underlying message of this verse is to remind the reader that it is God who ultimately controls the course of history and grants power to nations. The Assyrian king may have thought he was in control, but it was God who allowed him to achieve temporary success for His divine purposes.

God’s Judgment:Although God used Assyria as an instrument of His judgment, the verse hints at the Assyrian king’s misuse of power and oppression. He removed the boundaries of nations, taking away their freedom and dignity, and plundered their treasures. God, who cares for justice and righteousness, will ultimately hold Assyria accountable for its actions.

Application:The verse serves as a cautionary reminder for individuals and nations not to become prideful or attribute their accomplishments solely to their own strength and wisdom. It is important to recognise that all we have comes from God, and we should use our resources and abilities in ways that align with His purposes, seeking justice, mercy, and humility.
