Isaiah 19:13
“The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of Noph are deceived; they have also seduced Egypt, even they that are the stay of the tribes thereof.”
Context:The book of Isaiah contains prophecies given by the prophet Isaiah during a time of great political and social turmoil in the nation of Judah. This verse is part of a larger section (Isaiah 19:1-17) in which Isaiah prophesies about the judgment and downfall of Egypt.
Zoan and Noph:Zoan and Noph were ancient Egyptian cities, and here they symbolize the political and intellectual centers of Egypt. The “princes of Zoan” and the “princes of Noph” refer to the rulers and leaders of Egypt.
The foolishness and deception:In this verse, Isaiah declares that the princes of Zoan have become fools, and the princes of Noph have been deceived. This suggests that the leaders of Egypt, who were once esteemed for their wisdom and intelligence, have lost their way and are making unwise decisions.
Seduction and the downfall of Egypt:The verse continues by stating that these princes have also seduced Egypt, leading the nation astray. The phrase “even they that are the stay of the tribes thereof” suggests that these leaders were considered pillars of support and stability for Egypt, but their actions have ultimately contributed to the nation’s downfall.
