Isaiah 25:4

Context: The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. Isaiah contains prophecies, messages of judgment, and promises of restoration. Chapter 25 focuses on a future day of redemption and restoration when God’s people will experience His blessings and deliverance.

God’s strength to the poor and needy: The verse begins by acknowledging that God has been a strength to the poor and needy. This highlights God’s concern for the marginalised and vulnerable in society. He is not indifferent to their plight but actively supports and strengthens them.

Deliverance in distress: The verse goes on to describe God as a refuge from the storm and a shadow from the heat. This imagery conveys the idea that God provides shelter and protection for His people in times of trouble and distress. Just as a shelter protects from a storm or a shadow gives relief from scorching heat, God is a source of comfort and security in the midst of life’s difficulties.

Confronting the enemy: The verse concludes by mentioning “the blast of the terrible ones” that is compared to a storm against the wall. This refers to the attacks of the enemy, whether they are physical, emotional, or spiritual. Despite the fierceness of these assaults, God remains a stronghold for His people, shielding them from the onslaught and providing them with the strength to withstand and overcome.
