Isaiah 28:14

Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.

Isaiah 28:14 (KJV)

Isaiah 28:14 is part of a prophetic message delivered by Isaiah to the rulers and leaders of Jerusalem. The prophet addresses them as “scornful men,” a term that exposes their arrogant and dismissive attitude toward God and His word. Throughout the book of Isaiah, the prophet delivers messages of judgment, rebuke, and warning to the people of Israel, including their leaders, for their disobedience and unfaithfulness to God.

In this verse, God speaks through Isaiah, calling the attention of these scornful rulers. The phrase “hear the word of the Lord” is a direct challenge for them to listen and pay heed to divine instruction. It implies that they have been neglecting or disregarding God’s commands, and as a consequence, they are leading the people astray. These rulers bear the responsibility of guiding and governing the people of Jerusalem, but their actions have been contrary to God’s will.

By addressing them as “scornful men,” God highlights their arrogant and dismissive attitude toward Him and His teachings. Their scornful behavior is reflected in their disobedience, their reliance on human wisdom rather than divine guidance, and their failure to fulfill their responsibilities with integrity. The preceding verse (Isaiah 28:13) indicates that because they would not hear, God’s word would become a stumbling block to them, making this call to hear urgent and laden with impending judgment.

This verse sets the stage for the following verses (Isaiah 28:15-18), which mention a covenant with death and hell, and God’s foundation stone in Zion (Isaiah 28:16), a messianic reference. The call to hear is not merely an invitation but a warning against scoffing at God’s word and a summons to humble submission.

In a broader sense, this verse reminds us of the importance of listening to God’s word and obeying His commands. It emphasizes the need for leaders to govern with righteousness, wisdom, and reverence for God, as their actions impact not only themselves but also the people under their authority. The verse serves as a call to repentance and a warning of impending judgment, urging all who read it to acknowledge their errors, humble themselves before God, and return to His ways.

Isaiah 28:14 serves as a reminder of the consequences of disobedience, the importance of heeding God’s word, and the responsibility of leaders to govern with integrity and in accordance with divine principles.
