Isaiah 28:23

“Give ye ear, and hear my voice; hearken, and hear my speech.”

Context:Isaiah 28 is a chapter where the prophet Isaiah addresses the northern kingdom of Israel, specifically the leaders and rulers who were leading the people astray. The chapter contains both warnings of judgment and promises of restoration.

Study:Listen attentively:The verse begins with a call to “give ye ear” and “hear my voice.” This indicates the importance of attentive listening. God desires His people to pay attention to His message. It highlights the need for a receptive heart, an open ear, and a willingness to receive God’s instruction.

Obey and respond:The repetition of the phrase “hearken, and hear” emphasizes the urgency of responding to God’s message. It implies that mere hearing is not sufficient; one must also heed and act accordingly. God desires a response of obedience from His people.

Recognizing God’s voice:The passage highlights the authority of God’s voice. As believers, it is essential to discern God’s voice amidst the noise and distractions of the world. To recognize God’s voice, we need to cultivate a relationship with Him through prayer, study of His Word, and a sensitivity to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

The relevance of the verse:While this verse was originally addressed to the people of Israel, it holds significance for believers today. It reminds us of the importance of listening to God’s voice and obeying His commands. It encourages us to be attentive to His Word and responsive to His guidance in our lives.

Application:

Cultivate a listening heart:Take time each day to listen to God through prayer and meditation on His Word. Create an atmosphere of quietness and stillness to hear His voice.

Obey and respond:When you hear God’s instructions, be quick to respond in obedience. Align your actions with His will and purpose for your life.

Discern God’s voice:Seek to develop a close relationship with God so that you can recognize His voice more clearly. Be attentive to His leading through the Holy Spirit and align your decisions with His Word.

Share God’s message:As you receive God’s instruction and guidance, be ready to share His message with others. God may use you to communicate His truth and bring encouragement to those around you.

Remember, Isaiah 28:23 is not only an exhortation for the people of Israel but also for believers today. By listening attentively, responding in obedience, discerning God’s voice, and sharing His message, we can walk in alignment with God’s will and experience His blessings in our lives.
