Isaiah 37:21

Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria:

Isaiah 37:21 (KJV)

This verse stands at the turning point of a dramatic crisis. Sennacherib, king of Assyria, had already conquered many nations, including the northern kingdom of Israel, and now threatened Jerusalem. King Hezekiah of Judah, facing this overwhelming power, turned to the Lord in prayer, humbly appealing for salvation and protection. His prayer is recorded earlier in Isaiah 37.

In response, Isaiah the son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah. The prophet, by divine revelation, knew both the king’s prayer and God’s answer. The phrase “Thus saith the LORD God of Israel” carries the weight of divine authority; these are not human opinions but a direct communication from the Almighty. The words “Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib” show that God’s response is tied specifically to Hezekiah’s prayer. This is the first explicit statement that God has heard the king’s cry and is about to act.

The parallel account in 2 Kings 19:20 confirms the same message, with God saying, “I have heard.” This connection reinforces that the God of Israel is the covenant Lord who hears the prayers of His people. The verse also sets the stage for the following passage, where God pronounces judgment on Sennacherib and promises to defend Jerusalem.

This verse highlights the power of prayer and the role of God’s intervention in times of crisis. Hezekiah could not rely on his own military strength, so he brought his specific concern to God. Believers today can do the same, bringing their particular threats and fears before the Lord, trusting that He hears and will answer according to His will. The verse also underscores the importance of prophetic ministry in conveying God’s word to His people.

Even in the face of overwhelming challenges, prayer is an act of trust in God’s power and faithfulness. Hezekiah’s example reminds us that God is attentive to the cries of His people, especially when they face the threats of the enemy. The assurance given to Hezekiah is available to all who seek the Lord: He hears, He knows, and He will respond.
