Isaiah 42:15

I will make waste mountains and hills, and dry up all their herbs; and I will make the rivers islands, and I will dry up the pools.

Isaiah 42:15 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the prophetic book of Isaiah, which carries God’s messages to Israel and the surrounding nations. In Isaiah 42, God presents His servant and declares His purposes, showing that He alone rules over all things.

God speaks in the first person, declaring His absolute power over creation. The opening phrase, “I will make waste mountains and hills,” points to judgment on the proud and lofty. In Scripture, mountains and hills often symbolize strength and stability; their destruction shows that human pride cannot stand against God.

The drying up of “all their herbs” pictures desolation and barrenness. God controls the sources of life and sustenance, and He can withdraw them as a consequence of disobedience. The transformation of rivers into islands and the drying up of pools further display His supremacy over water, which was essential for survival. This language shows that God can alter the natural order and disrupt established patterns when He intervenes in human affairs.

This divine declaration is not merely a display of force but a demonstration of God’s sovereign will in history. The verse assures believers of God’s supreme authority and the certainty of His judgments. It humbles the exalted and brings low every obstacle, reminding us that no power or pride can resist His will. It also calls us to trust His control over both judgment and transformation, knowing that His purposes are just.
