Isaiah 43:10

Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.

Isaiah 43:10 (KJV)

This verse is part of a larger passage where God speaks through the prophet Isaiah to the nation of Israel, assuring them of His faithfulness and reminding them of His uniqueness and sovereignty.

God addresses the people of Israel, calling them “my witnesses.” This emphasizes their role as chosen representatives of God, appointed to testify about His existence, character, and actions. The Israelites were called to be a light to the nations, demonstrating through their lives and faithfulness that Yahweh, the Lord, is the one true God.

God also refers to the Israelites as “my servant whom I have chosen.” This highlights their special relationship with God and the purpose for which He has set them apart. As chosen servants, they were entrusted with the responsibility of fulfilling God’s divine plan and reflecting His glory to the world.

God’s intention in choosing the Israelites as witnesses and servants was so that they may “know and believe” Him and “understand” His nature and character. This indicates God’s desire for a deep, personal relationship with His people. He longs for them to intimately know Him, trust in Him, and comprehend His ways.

The latter part of the verse proclaims the uniqueness and exclusivity of God’s divine nature. God declares that there was no God formed before Him, meaning that He has always existed and there is no other deity who can claim the same. Furthermore, He states that there will be no God formed after Him, reaffirming His eternal nature and His position as the one and only true God.

This declaration of God’s exclusive deity is foundational to the Bible’s teaching on monotheism. The New Testament identifies believers in Christ as witnesses to the risen Lord, extending the call to testify to God’s truth beyond Israel to all who follow Him.

Believers today are called to be witnesses for God, not only in word but also in life. Knowing, believing, and understanding God leads to a confident testimony that He alone is God, and there is no other.

Consider how your life bears witness to the reality of the one true God. Are you living in a way that reflects His character and faithfulness to those around you?
