Isaiah 46:12

Hearken vnto me, ye stout hearted, that are farre from righteousnesse. Isaiah 46:12 (KJV)

The book of Isaiah is a prophetic work of the Old Testament traditionally attributed to the prophet Isaiah. It gathers a wide range of divine messages to Israel, offering both warnings of judgment and promises of hope. Historically the prophecies address a nation under threat from surrounding empires, while literarily they employ vivid imagery, rhetorical questions, and calls to repentance.

Understanding Isaiah 46:12, the phrase “Hearken unto me” is a direct invitation from God for His people to give careful attention to His word. The address “ye stouthearted” identifies those who are proud, stubborn, or self‑reliant—individuals who have turned away from humility before God. The description “that are far from righteousness” portrays their spiritual condition as distant from God’s standards of holy living.

Key themes emerge from this verse. First, God’s call for attention underscores His desire that all hear and respond to His corrective message. Second, the reference to the stouthearted warns against the danger of pride and self‑sufficiency, reminding believers that reliance on one’s own strength leads away from true righteousness. Third, the emphasis on righteousness highlights the necessity of aligning one’s life with God’s moral expectations.

The passage also points to divine sovereignty. By confronting the proud, God asserts His ultimate authority over history and events, contrasting His power with the impotence of idols and human wisdom. This sovereign perspective calls believers to recognize that only God controls the course of nations and personal destinies.

Finally, the verse functions as a corrective invitation. It urges those who have strayed to return to God’s ways, promising restoration for those who heed the call. For contemporary believers, Isaiah 46:12 serves as a reminder to examine the condition of their hearts, to reject pride, to pursue righteousness, and to acknowledge God’s supreme authority over every aspect of life.
