Isaiah 46:4

And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.

Isaiah 46:4 (KJV)

Isaiah spoke God’s word to Israel during a time of political and spiritual turmoil. In this chapter, the prophet contrasts the helplessness of Babylonian idols, which must be carried by their worshippers, with the living God who carries His own people. Against that backdrop, Isaiah 46:4 declares God’s sovereign faithfulness in a promise that reaches from birth to old age.

“Even to your old age I am he” affirms that God’s identity and presence do not change with time. He is the same God at the end of life as at the beginning, never limited by age or circumstance. “Even to hoar hairs will I carry you” uses gray hair as a picture of old age, promising that God will support His people when they are most frail and dependent.

The final clause, “I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you,” grounds the promise in God’s creative power. The God who formed His people will also sustain them and bring them safely through every trial. The verbs “carry,” “bear,” and “deliver” portray Him as a caregiver who does not abandon His own. This progression from making to bearing to delivering emphasizes that the God who created His people will also sustain them to the end and ultimately bring them to safety.

This promise echoes the wider biblical witness that God’s covenant faithfulness extends through the whole of life. As the Creator, He takes responsibility for what He has made, and His care does not weaken with human frailty. His reliability stands in stark contrast to the helplessness of idols, which must be carried by their worshippers.

Believers can trust God’s sustaining grace in every season, especially in times of weakness and dependence. Because He has promised to carry and deliver, we are never alone, and we may rely on His strength from youth to old age. This assurance offers comfort that His care does not diminish with human frailty.

This verse invites us to rest in the certainty of God’s unchanging care. He who made us will bear us; He who carries us will deliver us.
