Isaiah 50:5

Posted on 18 May at 15:05
Listen to this article

“The Lord God hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.”

Context:To understand Isaiah 50:5, we need to consider the broader context. The chapter begins with God addressing the Israelites, who were in exile due to their disobedience. God questions why there was no one among them to plead their case or deliver them. He then introduces the figure of the servant, who is depicted as being obedient and devoted to God’s will.

Isaiah 50:5 is part of a larger passage known as the “Servant Songs” in the book of Isaiah. These songs are prophecies concerning the coming Messiah, who is portrayed as the servant of the Lord. This particular verse offers insight into the character and obedience of the servant.

“The Lord God hath opened mine ear”:This phrase highlights the servant’s attentiveness and receptiveness to God’s voice. It signifies that the servant is not only willing to listen to God but has been enabled by God to understand and receive His instructions. The servant has a deep intimacy with God and is open to receiving divine revelation.

“I was not rebellious, neither turned away back”:This part emphasizes the servant’s obedience and faithfulness. Despite facing challenges, opposition, or suffering, the servant does not rebel against God’s will or turn away from His path. The servant’s commitment to God remains steadfast and unwavering.

Messianic fulfillment:While this verse directly refers to the servant, it ultimately points to Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Jesus perfectly embodied the qualities described in this verse. Throughout His life, Jesus demonstrated unwavering obedience to God the Father, willingly surrendering Himself to fulfill God’s plan of salvation. He listened attentively to the Father’s instructions and faithfully carried out His mission, even in the face of great suffering and opposition.

Isaiah 50:5 reminds us of the servant’s commitment to God’s will and the example of obedience and faithfulness we find in Jesus Christ. It encourages us to seek a close relationship with God, listen attentively to His voice, and remain faithful in following His ways in our own lives.
