Isaiah 50:4

Listen to this article

“The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.”

Context:To better understand the significance of Isaiah 50:4, it’s important to consider its context within the book of Isaiah. The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament, written by the prophet Isaiah. This particular verse is part of a section known as the “Servant Songs” (Isaiah 42:1-9, 49:1-13, 50:4-11, 52:13-53:12) which speaks about the servant of the Lord, who is often identified as the Messiah, Jesus Christ.

The Tongue of the Learned:In Isaiah 50:4, the speaker, identified as the servant of the Lord, declares that God has given him the “tongue of the learned.” This phrase indicates that the servant has been granted the ability to speak with wisdom and knowledge. The servant is not only a student but also a teacher who can effectively communicate the message from God to those who are weary or in need of encouragement.

Speaking a Word in Season:The purpose of the servant’s learning and the gift of eloquent speech is to bring comfort, encouragement, and timely words to those who are weary. The servant of the Lord has been equipped by God to speak a word in season, meaning that he knows when and how to speak to individuals who are burdened, discouraged, or going through difficult times. This highlights the compassion and understanding of the servant, as well as his role in ministering to the brokenhearted.

God’s Faithfulness and Daily Guidance:The verse also reveals the servant’s close relationship with God. It says that God wakes the servant morning by morning and opens his ear to hear as the learned. This suggests a daily communion between the servant and God, where the servant seeks God’s guidance, wisdom, and understanding. The servant recognizes the importance of starting each day with a receptive heart and attentive ear to hear what God has to say.

Application:As Christians, we can draw several lessons from Isaiah 50:4. Firstly, we should cultivate a desire to learn and grow in our knowledge of God’s Word. This will enable us to speak words of comfort, encouragement, and wisdom to those who are weary. Secondly, we need to develop an intimate relationship with God, seeking His guidance and wisdom on a daily basis. By doing so, we can be sensitive to the needs of others and share God’s love and truth with them.

  • In conclusion, Isaiah 50:4 emphasizes the servant’s ability to speak with wisdom and understanding, bringing comfort to the weary. It also highlights the servant’s close relationship with God and the importance of daily seeking His guidance. As followers of Christ, we can learn from this verse and strive to be vessels of encouragement and love to those around us.
