Isaiah 59:16

Context:Isaiah 59 is part of a larger section known as the “Third Isaiah” (Isaiah 56-66), which focuses on the post-exilic period when the Israelites returned from Babylonian captivity. This chapter addresses the sinfulness and corruption of the people and the need for repentance.

God’s Observation:In the first part of Isaiah 59:16, it says, “And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor.” This verse emphasises God’s observation of the situation. God looks upon humanity and sees that there is no one capable of interceding or standing in the gap on behalf of the people.

God’s Intervention:The second part of the verse states, “Therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.” Here, the verse highlights God’s response to the situation. Since no human was capable of interceding, God Himself took action. The reference to “his arm” symbolises God’s power and might. God, in His righteousness, brings salvation to Himself and sustains Himself.

Application:

• Recognition of Sin:This verse reminds us of the universal condition of sin and our inability to save ourselves. It emphasises the need for each person to recognise their own sinfulness and the insufficiency of human efforts alone.
• God’s Intercession:Although there was no human intercessor, God intervened on behalf of humanity. This demonstrates God’s compassion, love, and willingness to extend salvation. It highlights God’s initiative in reaching out to save us.
• God’s Righteousness:The verse speaks of God’s righteousness, which sustains Him. This highlights the perfection of God’s character and His unwavering commitment to justice. It reminds us that God’s righteousness serves as the foundation for His redemptive actions.
• Appreciation for God’s Salvation:Reflecting on this verse should deepen our appreciation for God’s gracious act of salvation through Jesus Christ. Recognising our inability to save ourselves, we can humbly accept God’s offer of redemption and rely on His righteousness.
